The idea of the nature trail focused on radon was born in the year 2009. From the first time it was clear that the location should be the Jachymov (Joachimsthal) city which has been historically connected with natural radioactivity and radon for more than 100 years. Marie Curie Sklodowska discovered radium in pitchblende mined in Jachymov in the year 1898. In the year 1906 the first radon spa in the world were established in Jachymov. It is obvious that the first radon measurements in dwellings and the first remedial measures in the Czech Republic were also performed here.

The aim was to prepare clear, understandable and comprehensive information boards to show the importance of radon as a carcinogen and to demonstrate the simplicity of prevention and remediation against radon. We hope that the radon nature trail will provoke new interest among visitors and inhabitants of Jáchymov in radon and in effective possibilities of prevention and remediation. Nowadays, there is no reason for having higher radon concentrations than the reference value in any house.

We wish you the fruitful trail.
